Best Practices for Diabetes Prevention at Geisinger Health Plan
More than 30 million individuals are living with diabetes in the United States and an estimated 84 million have prediabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Without effective intervention and treatment, the latter will develop type 2 diabetes within five years and the health risks and costs associated with chronic diseases.
Diabetes prevention is healthier and less expensive than treatment. Recent findings from a CDC longitudinal study indicate that prevention programs are leading to a decrease in the rate of type diabetes. These evidence-based programs focus on behavior changes, such as healthy eating and physical activity, to prevent the development of diabetes and the health risks and costs associated with the disease.
